One of the taboo subjects in our recent history is that of babies stolen from Francoism, which Albert Pijuan addresses in the play El Regne de les Anguiles. The work opens this week at the Versus Glòries room in Barcelona (from May 3 to 28).
In this work, Pijuan, who won the Ciutat de Tarragona and the Finestres prize with his novel Tsunami (Angle Editorial), turns one of the darkest facts of our past into a heartbreaking comedy of rabid news.
“What began with an ideological operation to eliminate the “red gene”, later led to the sale of babies born to mothers without resources; to the exploitation of women in the name of charity and more recently in its capitalist version, in bellies for rent”, explains the company LAminimAL Teatre, which celebrates its tenth anniversary.
It also talks about the ambitions for power of each of the characters, the greed of three wretches that leads them to create their own laws outside of legality; a system within the system, the struggle to achieve a higher social status in a democracy that is being created with its back to the marginalized in a regime where “anyone can be kingâ€.
The action takes place in Barceloneta in 1973, with some petty criminals who want to arrive before the official mafias and appropriate a baby. But his “project” will be challenged by a series of factors…
Daniela de Vecchi and Toni Figuera are the directors of The Kingdom of the Eels, which features the interpretation of Carles Cruces, Joan MartÃnez Vidal and Neus Soler. The production is by LAminimAL and Sala Versus Glòries, with the collaboration of Atrium Viladecans and Viu el Teatre.
