The Balearic Islands Electoral Board has accepted a complaint from the PP against the president of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, since it considers that she breached the Electoral Law by attending an “institutional and electoralist” act as president of the Government and not as a candidate. The Electoral Board believes that in this act, in which Armengol announced aid to companies to implement the four-day work week, the principles of objectivity, equality and neutrality of public powers were breached.

In its resolution, the Electoral Board recalls that, from the time the elections are called, the law prohibits any act organized or financed directly or indirectly by the public powers that contains allusions to the achievements or successes obtained. He believes that the announcement made by Armengol is similar to “a successful campaign”, something that is not allowed.

The Electoral Board is based on two decisions of the Central Electoral Board on acts of the Madrid president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, in the 2021 campaign. She stresses that, in one of them, she made a series of announcements of future projects that can be understood ” without effort” as a message that was part of the electoral program of the PP. In the other, in a tribute to a bullfighter, the Central Electoral Board understood that the Madrid president exceeded the mere tribute and entered the field of the electoral campaign.

The resolution obliges the Government of France Armengol to remove from the website the press release of April 20 in which the visit was reported, something that the PP also requested, but considers that a sanction cannot be imposed on the Balearic president , another of the questions that the ‘popular’ requested in their appeal.

The Government of Francina Armengol has already announced that it will present an appeal to the Central Electoral Board as soon as the resolution is communicated to it. He insists that there was no violation of the Law in any case, but that the president made an announcement of some aid for which there is already even a reserved budget item. He insists that it is a government action that will be maintained until they are in office, once the elections have been held.

The PP does not see it in the same way and its campaign spokesman, Sebastià Sagreras, assures that the reproach against Armengol is satisfactory because the president is confusing the work of the Executive with the PSOE campaign. She has asked the head of the Balearic Executive to stop using “Government resources” to campaign in favor of the PSOE. She has also announced that the party will be very vigilant so that actions like these are not repeated.
