That the foundations of golf have been shaken since the arrival of the Saudi Super League, LIV Golf, is clear evidence. One of the main fears of all the actors was the consequences that this conflict could have in the Ryder Cup, the competition par excellence. And from this week it can already be confirmed with evidence that it will be devastating.

The DP World Tour, the former European Tour, has announced that Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Richard Bland have decided to resign their membership of the Tour. A decision that comes barely a month after a court agreed with the DP World Tour in its decision to fine players who participate in LIV Golf tournaments without permission, as is the case of the four previously mentioned.

The decision of García, Westwood, Poulter and Bland goes far beyond not playing on the European Tour, since by ceasing to be members they are no longer eligible to play in the Ryder Cup. And both García, the player who has scored the most points in the history of the competition (28.5), like Westwood and Poulter, one of the heroes of Medinah’12, have been three fundamental pillars of the Old Continent team for many years. Between the three they accumulate 28 Ryders in their career.

In a statement made public, the DP World Tour thanked the four players for their contribution to the Circuit during so many years of their career, highlighting the role they have played especially in the Ryder Cup. Although in the same letter it is recalled that the sanctions received are the result of of the “own decisions” of the players.
