There are those who assume the task of doing laundry as a tedious obligation. For other people, on the other hand, doing laundry is a pleasant moment. The satisfaction of seeing how your clothes are washed in the washing machine, the smell of clean clothes, ironing as a relaxing activity…
For the latter, having a laundry room is one of the most coveted requirements in a house. A space to distribute and wash clothes in an organized way, without getting in the way of other rooms. Now, to create the perfect laundry room there are a series of criteria that you must take into account.
The location will greatly depend on the layout of the house. The laundry room must have water and electricity connections. Within this premise, it can be installed next to a bathroom or kitchen, or in the basement. If you opt for the latter, keep in mind that going up and down the stairs with your laundry can be an impediment.
Avoid placing the laundry room near the bedrooms, as the noise from the electrical appliances could make it difficult to rest. In addition, it is advisable that the area have good ventilation, to prevent the smell of humidity and the proliferation of mold and bacteria. If it is not a room with windows, a dehumidifier can help you.
The essential appliance in the laundry room is, of course, the washing machine. If you have enough space (and budget), a dryer will be more than welcome, especially if you live in cold or humid areas. It is also advisable that there is a sink, to scrub resistant stains or wash delicate items by hand.
It would be appropriate for the clothesline to be in this room, whether it is in the window, one standing, wall, ceiling or those that are hung from the radiator. This way you will save walks with clothes. It is also ideal that the iron and ironing board fit. Finally, it is preferable that there are storage furniture, baskets for dirty and clean clothes and a surface to fold the laundry.
If you have little space, it’s time to get creative with the distribution. The dryer can go on top of the washing machine. The iron can be screwed to the wall and unfold when you are going to use it. There are clotheslines that are placed on the wall or on the ceiling and are lowered when you need to hang clothes. If there is no space for cabinets or storage furniture, the baskets hung on the wall are an excellent option.
As for the aforementioned storage, you can use drawers, wheeled carts, shelves, cabinets or baskets. The best thing is that there is space to separate the clothes by fabrics and colors; as well as to properly organize detergents and fabric softeners. If you have pets or children at home, try to keep the products out of their reach.
