On May 25, the third edition of the “Maquetem Mataró” project will be presented in Mataró (Maresme), a model of the city in which 358 secondary school students from five different institutes have participated.
The exhibition of the model, in which you can see a photographic report of its creation, will open on Thursday, May 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the Iluro Foundation’s Ateneu Cultural Center and can be visited from May 26 to June (from Tuesday to Saturday: 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Sundays and holidays: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.).
As Roser Garcia, a mathematics teacher at the Damià Campeny Institute and coordinator of the project, explains, “in the final production, 159 50×70 centimeter foam board plates have been created to generate the Mataró plan, which has a total size of approximately 9×9 meters, made at a scale of 1: 400. As a three-dimensional touch, 25 models of city buildings at a scale of 1: 150 have been placed on this plan. In addition, you can see another model where you can see the topography of the city and its surroundings as well as other monuments of the city made with 3D printer”.
The working group has been created with the driving force of each of the four centers participating in this edition of the “Maquetem Mataró” project: Institut-Escola Àngela Bransuela, Institut Alexandre Satorras, Institut Cinc Sênies, Institut Damià Campeny and Institut Laia l ‘Goalkeeper. To coordinate the work of the 358 students who have participated in the project, the group has met electronically throughout this course to specify all aspects related to content, evaluation and final production.
The “Maquetem Mataró” project arises from the creation of the didactic geometry sequence of the Vilatzara Group (Mathematics training and innovation team for secondary education of the Institute of Educational Sciences of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, which works on the elaboration of of tasks to improve the learning of mathematics for twenty-five years). Trying to build mathematics from interpreting everyday phenomena, it was decided to create an activity that would be enriched by networking between different centers in the city of Mataró.
This project has been exposed in different events of didactics of mathematics such as the C2EM (Catalan Congress of Mathematics) in December 2020 in Reus-Tarragona, the XIX Conference on Mathematics Education of APAMMS in March 2022 in Mataró or the JAEM ( Day of Learning and Teaching of Mathematics) in July 2022 in Valencia. From this diffusion, this course the Maquetem Vic and Maquetem Vilanova projects have been launched.
The networking of the project stands out, leading to talk of “Maquetem Mataró” as a collaborative project on two levels: externally with different centers of the city and internally with different departments of the same center (Technology, Social Sciences, linguistic field, Visual and Plastic and Mathematics); becoming even richer.
In an educational moment where cooperative work and learning situations are being further promoted, the “Maquetem Mataró” project is an exemplary model. The working group, recognized in the Permanent Formation Plan of the Professorat area, is open to the incorporation of new centers with a view to future editions of the project.
