In Puigcerdà (La Cerdanya), as in Vilafranca del Penedès (Alt Penedès) or Reus (Baix Camp), Junts per Catalunya presents a new candidate who has the support of the outgoing mayor to retain the municipal government.
The same casuistry occurs in the three municipalities, converging mayors –Albert Piñeira, Pere Regull and Carles Pellicer, respectively– who did not join Junts in 2020 when the new party was formed, but have ended up opting for the formation of Jordi Turull for the municipal elections, and JxCat pursues a quiet relay in those municipalities.
The risk that the formation sees is the “temptation” that they try to kick them out considering that their political space has been in the municipal government for too long. For this reason, yesterday the general secretary of Junts asked from the capital of La Cerdanya, together with the candidate, Jordi Gassió, he asked for “a very good result”, to avoid “the temptation that some moved to throw out someone who has been there for a long time” ally, as happened in 2019 in other municipalities such as Tà rrega (Urgell), Figueres (Alt Empordà ) or Sant Cugat del Vallès (Vallès Occidental).
In the three places Esquerra Republicana agreed with the PSC and the CUP so that the post-convergents would not continue to lead the mayors, although they had been the first force. Junts now aspires to recover those fiefdoms and also wants to consolidate and maintain its strength in other cities that the convergents had historically governed, such as Vilafranca del Penedès, Olot (Garrotxa), Banyoles (Pla de l’Estany) or Vic (Osona). Places where Republicans aspire to bite the feet of their former partners in the Government.
“Once they arrive, they don’t know what to doâ€, said Turull, who has warned that “it costs a lot to do and undo doesn’t cost anythingâ€. In the act, the first to speak was the mayor of Puigcerdà , Piñeira, and then the Alp candidate and president of the post-convergents in the region, Glòria Rigola, took the floor. The candidate, Gassió, has closed the rally.
In addition, Turull has launched from the capital of La Cerdanya a recurring message from his formation in this campaign: “Voting for Junts on May 28 is to send a message to all those who are part of the State operation to put the independence movement to sleep through dialogue tables or clarity agreements”, an allusion to ERC.
