The Civil Guard is carrying out an operation in Mojácar (Almería) against an alleged plot to buy votes by mail for the municipal elections on 28-M, according to sources from the Armed Institute confirm to La Vanguardia. So far there are seven people arrested, but the operation is in full exploitation phase so more arrests are not ruled out.

According to sources close to the Civil Guard investigation, the operation that began this morning could reach ten people arrested. At the moment, two of the people arrested are on the PSOE list. One of them, according to the same sources, is number five on the socialist list for the municipality of Almeria.

Agents of the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard are making arrests and searches, with the prior authorization of the Investigating Court Number 4 of Vera (Almería) for an alleged crime of electoral fraud. In the records carried out, dozens of fraudulent ballots have been found.

The system allegedly used by the plot in Almería is similar to that of the disarticulated plot in Melilla: financial compensation in exchange for postal suffrage. The police operation carried out yesterday in Melilla resulted in ten detainees who are accused of an electoral crime and belonging to a criminal group. Among those arrested is a member of the Government of Melilla, who is running as number three on the electoral list of the Coalition for Melilla.

The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, stated this Wednesday, regarding the alleged plot to buy votes in Mojácar (Almería), that it is “very serious in terms of democratic quality that there are people who in one way or another try to alter the will of the citizens” and has asked the State Security Forces and Bodies and the judicial authorities to be “determinative” and to go to the end so that those who seek to alter the electoral processes pay their responsibilities.
