The UN Committee for the Rights of Women has shown its concern about the “prevalence” in the rates of murders due to gender violence in Spain. The truth is that 20 women have been murdered by this scourge in Spain so far year, and the number rises to 1,204 since 2003.

At the same time, the UN also points out the lack of attention that the latest legislative measures implemented by the Government have towards new violence, such as digital violence. Digital sexist violence is an extension of violence against women outside the Internet and occurs both in the context of the couple and outside of it. Insults, slander and threats are the most widespread forms, but not the only ones.

The body has issued an assessment of Spain in relation to its fight against this scourge, in which it has shown its good reception of the new laws on women’s rights approved in the country, as well as “the numerous legislative efforts made by Spain to build a policy to prevent and address gender violence against women”.

However, he has expressed concern about the fact that violence against women “prevails with a high rate of femicide” in the country and also considers that the legislation and the efforts made in this fight are “insufficient to address some specific forms of gender violence such as cyber violence”.

From the UN they have recommended to the Government that it consolidate its policies for the prevention of gender violence against women, reinforcing the identification of situations of vulnerability and the prevention of recidivism” and that, in addition, “redouble its efforts to quickly establish the Femicide Observatory.

In this sense, it has also pointed out a “lack of an intersectional approach in the implementation” of the rights recognized in the new laws approved. The body’s experts believe that these do not adequately address “the situation of Roma women, refugee and migrant women and other women subject to intersecting forms of discrimination.”

That is why it has also called on Spain to continue systematically using temporary special measures to correct imbalances and guarantee their effective application to anticipate structural changes.

On the other hand, he has called on the country to “urgently” address the causes and disproportionate impact of climate change on women and girls.
