The Platform of Non-permanent Doctors and Physicians of Madrid and the Association of Specialist Physicians of Madrid (AFEM) have decided this Wednesday to suspend the strike that began every Tuesday and Thursday since May 4 with the aim of ending the temporary period between these professionals until the formation of a new government in the region which, in the absence of confirmation, could be resolved at the end of the month.

In a statement, the Platform that brings together more than 6,000 doctors and physicians with temporary contracts and, of them, more than 3,600 in a situation of “temporary abuse”, regrets “the null interest” of the Madrid Ministry of Health in stabilizing their jobs and retain professionals with long years of experience in public health.

After eight days of strike, according to the organizers, “the Ministry of Health continues to hide behind the fact that it is not legal, without any legal reasoning, to free up 3,247 positions so that the doctors and other physicians in Madrid, whose contracts have been outside the law for an unjustifiably prolonged period of time”.

For the promoters of the strike, “this is the only fair solution to end temporary employment in the Community of Madrid, which leads the percentage of doctors with temporary contracts, with 53.9%, of which 13.5% They are over 60 and will retire in this situation.

After the re-election of Isabel Díaz Ayuso as president of the Community of Madrid, they have once again asked her for an urgent meeting to “find a solution”, given that “the Ministry of Health does not act and at this moment it is yet to be defined who will be the new adviser”.

In the note they maintain that since the last meeting with the Deputy Minister of Health Care and Public Health, Fernando Prados, -which took place last week- there has been “no progress” and that the only interest of the representatives of the Ministry was that the doctors will call off the strike before the May 28 elections.

To demonstrate the “legality” of their claims, they have convened an institutional meeting of expert lawyers in the field, to which lawyers from the Community of Madrid will be invited, to analyze the situation together and try to provide legally secure solutions to their problem. , such as those that have been transferred to the Ministry for months.

The doctors and physicians of Madrid hospitals have decided to temporarily suspend the strike until a new government is formed, but they have stressed that this does not mean that they are abandoning their cause because they will continue to “fight” until the opposition contest is annulled.

Its objective is to get the Madrid Executive to annul the OPE of the Community of Madrid for 2018 and 2019, published in December 2021, and release the 3,247 places for medical specialists in hospital care of the Madrid Health Service (Sermas) so that it can be access them through a merit contest.

After thanking the “support and understanding” of the patients with the strike, they have claimed an agreement for the doctors to overcome the deficiencies of the public health system and face the challenges of the future.
