The State of Mexico, one of the most influential territories in the country, has taken a radical political turn, after Delfina Gómez Álvarez, from the party of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, won the elections this Sunday to governor.

Gómez’s triumph, in addition to bringing change to the state, which for almost 100 years was governed by the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), is part of the political project called the Fourth Transformation, headed by López Obrador.

Gómez, a candidate for the Juntos Hacemos Historia coalition in the State of Mexico and who for months had been leading the polls by up to 20 points over her rival, Alejandra del Moral, of the PRI, said that better times would come for the people of Mexico.

Shortly after the polling stations closed, Gómez declared herself the winner of the electoral contest, after the so-called quick vote counts carried out by the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM), favored her by almost 10 points.

According to the first IEEM counts given after eight o’clock at night, Gómez reached between 52.1% and 54.2% of the vote cast, while Alejandra del Moral, from the Va por el Estado de México coalition, it had between 43% and 45.2%, which was an irreversible result, due to the reliability of the sample.

After the announcement, Gómez said that the victory is not only for her, but for millions of inhabitants, and she said she was proud because she will be the first female governor of the State of Mexico.

“The transformation begins today in the State of Mexico, thanks to everyone, everyone! Your vote not only marks a watershed, but also brings hope to our land. We won together and that is how we are going to build together a prosperous and dignified future for the people of Mexico,” Gómez wrote on social networks. Using a phrase widely used by López Obrador, Gómez said that “it went very well for us” and assured that better times will come for the people of Mexico.

Meanwhile, her contender Alejandra del Moral, at a press conference, acknowledged her defeat and congratulated the Morena candidate. “I am a Democrat. I fought with all my might. I spared no effort. I am at peace and stand tall,” Del Moral said.

For her part, the head of government of Mexico City and one of the strongest candidates to contend and win the 2024 presidential elections, Claudia Sheinbaum, also congratulated her party partner. “Today a teacher who comes from below, who has conviction, who loves her state and her people who has known how to awaken hope, won the governorship of the State of Mexico, Delfina Gómez will be governor for our movement. Mexico wants the Fourth Transformation to continue. Mexico wants corruption and privileges to remain in the past. Congratulations to each and every Mexican. Mexico continues to make history,” Sheinbaum said.

Likewise, the Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard and also an aspirant to contend for the candidacy for the presidency, sent congratulations to Gómez through Twitter. “Congratulations Delfina! A great triumph of the cause in which we are active, very great and good news for Mexico, the Fourth Transformation reaches the State under your leadership! Hug”.
