The still mayor of Badalona, the socialist Ruben Guijarro, has announced today that he will abandon the act of councilor in the opposition once he has carried out the transfer of powers to the new mayor, Xavier Garcia Albiol, for what is given until next September to resign from municipal politics.
Guijarro, after several days of internal reflection with his party, the PSC, has decided that he will not continue in the opposition of the Badalona City Council. The decision, as he explained in Badalona Comunicació, is the result of the electoral debacle of his party and in general of the left in the city, where Albiol has swept an absolute majority of 18 councillors.
The PSC in Badalona, although it is the first left-wing force in the City Council with 13,167 votes, has lost two councilors and more than 6,500 votes. That is why, “out of responsibility” he has submitted his resignation to the local socialist leadership and the national leadership led by Salvador Illa.
“There needs to be new leadership and new politicians with renewed strength” declared Guijarro, who confesses that he is exhausted after “having given everything for Badalona”. The mayor understands that “it takes a lot of energy to be in opposition” and that is why he has decided to step aside.
Although Guijarro has not revealed his professional future, he has assured that before the next early general elections he will lead the campaign in Badalona. Regarding the upcoming elections, the mayor has declared that the decision of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez “has been bold and courageous” given the results obtained in the regional and local elections.
The socialist candidate regretted that the public did not understand the motion of no confidence in Xavier GarcÃa Albiol and penalized the parties that promoted it. An action that he would undertake again in a case such as the plot in tax havens. In the same way, he has also deplored that the quadripartite government “had not known how to visualize the work of 18 months” and, as in the rest of Catalonia, “it has penalized alternative governments and coalitions. Guijarro summarizes that” voters have asked for stability politics and has given the sole government to GarcÃa Albiol”.
