Rafael Amargo’s life is going through a most complicated week. After several arrests, accusations and searches at his house, the Granada-born bailaor has ended up sitting on the accused’s bench this Wednesday. Facing a nine-year prison sentence for an alleged drug trafficking offence, the last thing the artist could expect is for the session to be suspended indefinitely. But that is just what has happened.
Amargo has appeared this morning at the headquarters of the Provincial Court of Madrid together with Jaime Caballero, his defense lawyer. The artist has been calm before journalists, a facet that has completely disappeared after the trial was canceled without Amargo even having the opportunity to defend himself. Very angry and upset, the bailaor has expressed his dissatisfaction with this situation, remarking how his sick father is dying in the hospital.
“A weed is being made without any sense. I prefer not to continue talking because I prefer not to suffer and above all what hurts me the most is that it is costing my father his life, who is dying in the hospital, okay? Now, please, it’s a matter of human resourcesâ€, explained the bailaor. Bitter has also defended tooth and nail that there was nothing in his house, that he is the victim of a “provoked crime” and that they are completely destroying his family.
The cause of the postponement can be found in Eduardo de los Santos, producer of Amargo and another of the defendants in Operation Cuervo. According to the sequence of events, he would have hidden 80 grams of methamphetamine and other narcotic substances in his house. De los Santos has asked to postpone the hearing after his public defender resigned to defend him, in addition to recounting an alleged police and coercion plot that a Madrid judge would already be investigating.
This is just one of the several open cases that Rafael Amargo has open for drug trafficking. The one that has seated him today on the bench is carried by the judge of Instruction number 27 of Madrid, in relation to a possible sale of drugs in the apartment that the singer has on EspÃritu Santo street in the Spanish capital. These events did not cost him his arrest until last March, when he was arrested in Alicante and later released on provisional release.
However, this arrest is only an aggravating factor in the incident for which the bailaor finds himself at the gates of jail. Amargo was also arrested along with his partner in December 2020, as part of Operation Codax. After having declared before the police, the artist was provisionally released, but with different precautionary measures applied. Among them, the prohibition to leave the country, the withdrawal of the passport and the obligation to go to court every fortnight.
