Although dogs and cats are the favorite pets of the Spanish, parrots are also very popular. Not surprisingly, these exotic birds boast a majestic appearance, are friendly, very intelligent and keep a lot of company at home. So much so that some even learn to speak or repeat words and sounds.
Now, if you are thinking of having a parrot as a pet, you should know that they require a series of extremely important care. Although they do not need as much attention as a dog or a kitten, they are more demanding than a fish or a hamster, to name a few examples. Therefore, it is in your best interest to assess their needs before making the decision.
Parrots are wild animals, but this does not mean that they do not need company, quite the contrary. They do not like loneliness at all, so it is best for them to live with other birds of their species. If this isn’t possible, make sure you spend time cuddles and games with him so he doesn’t get stressed or depressed.
If you acquire it from when it is a pup, it will be easier to establish a close bond between you and your feathered pet. If it is an adult parrot, it will require more patience on your part to win its affection. Do not overwhelm or pressure him, get closer to him little by little, talk to him delicately and offer him edible prizes.
Ideally, the parrot should live in a large aviary or, failing that, a cage that should be large enough for the animal to spread and flap its wings, as well as move around. Place it in a quiet room, without too much noise and away from sudden drafts.
For proper cage hygiene, put newspaper or cat litter in the bottom and change it once a week. Every two or three weeks you should do a thorough cleaning, always without using aggressive products such as bleach.
Inside the cage you should place a feeder and a drinker with fresh water always available. As well as a calcium stone or some other utensil with which the bird can sharpen its beak. It is also convenient that it has a swing and various toys to play with.
Your parrot’s diet should be based on specific feed for them, consisting of seeds or grains. In addition, you have to offer him fruits and vegetables with which to complete his nutrition and that serve as a reward.
Parrots are known for their intelligence, and if you put the time and effort into training them, you can get them to learn certain tricks, such as how to speak or repeat sounds. You should insist daily, although in short sessions so that he does not get tired. Always do it from the positive reinforcement, offering him prizes so that he learns how he should behave.
