The ex-mayor of Vilablareix David Mascort i Subiranes (Barcelona, 1969) will be the new councilor for Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda of the Government of Pere Aragonès, replacing Teresa Jordà – who will go to the left lists in the general elections of 23 julio as number 2 of Gabriel Rufián- with the challenges of continuing the management of the drought and reversing Catalonia’s delay in the deployment of renewable energies.

Mascort, who until today was the general secretary of the Department, rises to direct it. He has a degree in Economics and Business Sciences and a master’s degree in business management.

President of the Regional Federation of ERC in Girona, Mascort was mayor of Vilablareix (Gironès) between 2011 and 2022, he also held the vice-presidency of the Regional Council of Gironès between 2003 and 2007 and was a member of the Diputación de Girona from 2013 to 20.

The new head of Acció Climàtica will have to give new impetus to the fight against the drought that has gripped Catalonia for more than thirty months, although since May the weather has already taken a turn that allows for some optimism. In fact, the rains of recent weeks have delayed the adoption of more drastic measures than those already in force, such as water restrictions that prevent irrigation in parks and gardens or the closure of the Urgell canal, which will cause the harvest to be lost. of fruit trees in some regions of Lleida.

Mascort should promote measures to increase the reuse of water, desalination and savings, in the face of a water crisis that could be increasingly frequent due to the effect of climate change.

Despite the fact that the rains in May and early June have slightly softened the harshness of the situation, the Government maintains its forecast that a large part of the Catalan population will enter the last alert phase, the emergency phase, at the end of summer or early autumn, which will bring more restrictions.

In parallel, Mascort will have to deal with the problems that farmers face due to the reduction in water availability for irrigation, especially in the Urgell Canal, as well as the impact on crops due to the retreat of the Ebro Delta.

Another folder is that of the deployment of the energy transition, especially to reduce the significant delay that Catalonia accumulates in wind power, for which the Government promotes, among other initiatives, a park of mills in the sea in front of the Gulf of Roses (Girona ).
