Junts per Catalunya wants to be decisive in Madrid after the general elections on July 23 and faces the electoral race with optimism after the results of the municipal elections on May 28. The leader of the formation in the Congress of Deputies and number one for Barcelona, MÃriam Nogueras, said this Monday surrounded by the other three heads of the list – Marta Madrenas (Girona), Josep Maria Cruset (Tarragona) and Isidre GavÃn (Lleida )– that if they have the “key” in the next legislature “nothing will be the same again” because they, in contrast to the Republican Left, “will be implacable.”
In his speech, with the campaign slogan “Per Catalunya” on the lectern, Nogueras questioned the strategy of the ERC and PDECat, which have sealed pacts with the central government in the last four years. In his opinion, the forces that until now had the “key” in the Lower House have done “the same” without obtaining any results, and he has assured that they will defend the interests of Catalonia “without complexes.” “What has been done has been without a red carpet for the PSOE and the Government, all in exchange for nothing”, the deputy referred to some of the initiatives promoted by her group, although she has also denounced the lack of execution by the State and compliance with some of these measures.
“Nothing has to be done as it has been done up to now,” said Nogueras, who has said several times that the elections “are not about PSOE or PP, but about Catalonia or PSOE and PP.” With this last axiom, the post-convergent leader in Madrid has avoided specifying what they will do in the event that they have it in their hands to invest one government or another or that governance depends on them.
“Some have abandoned. If you abandon or abstain, Spain wins,” Nogueras warned, with a message that alluded to the risk of abstention from independence and the vote for the other Catalan parties. “From Junts we will be relentless. We have held the position despite everything and despite everyone. Our goal is to move forward, take the initiative, and if we have the key, everything changes,” he summarized.
In the appearance, Nogueras has not clarified whether they are considering including Jaume Giró on their list as number two. The former Minister of Economy and Hisenda was going to appear in the primaries against Nogueras, but at the last moment he decided to take a step back after speaking with the party’s general secretary, Jordi Turull, and with the former president Carles Puigdemont, who believed that it was not appropriate such a primary process at the moment. Another option contemplated is that Giró, who has been part of the JxCat leadership since last summer, goes to the Senate.
This Sunday a meeting of the Junts national council is being held that was to be used to analyze the municipal elections on May 28 and at that meeting the lists for 23-J will be ratified.
