Pere Aragonès assured on Monday when he announced the changes in the Government that Juli Fernàndez ceased to be Minister of Territory by mutual agreement and without major problems. Four days later, ERC has announced through a statement that the also former mayor of Sabadell will occupy a relevant position: a new deputy general secretary with strategy, communication and institutional coordination functions. The creation of this secretary implies that she joins the deputy general secretary that Marta Vilalta has held since 2019.

In addition, Vilalta will also share the functions of party spokesperson with the deputy Raquel Sans. “After the municipal elections held on May 28, the Executive proposes the reinforcement of the leading leadership in order to face the general political action with greater guarantees and strength, and both the appointment of the general elections on July 23 , as the second half of the Catalan legislature and the beginning of the mandate in city councils and supra-municipal entities”, he assures in the republican formation.

The changes must be ratified by the national council that Esquerra will hold this Friday. To these changes, another one must be added: the creation of a secretariat for political coherence that reports to the area of ??institutional coordination, which will be the responsibility of the until now secretary of municipal politics and transversal projects, Alba Camps.

With the incorporation of Fernàndez in the management structure, the party will have two number four. Until today, it has been Vilalta who occupied this place alone, below the president of the formation, Oriol Junqueras, the general secretary, Marta Rovira, and the national coordinator, Pere Aragonès.

Fernàndez was removed from his position at the head of the Ministry of Territory last Monday, together with the head of Education until then, Josep Gonzàlez-Cambray, and Teresa Jordà, who had served as Minister of Climate Action. Jordà is now number two on the list that ERC will present in Barcelona to participate in the Congress.

The former Regional Minister of Territories was widely criticized for his opposition to the Ronda Nord layout, in the fourth ring road. But the pact with the PSC that the Generalitat carried out to approve the 2023 budgets, which included the construction of this route, left Fernàndez in a delicate situation.
