The Urban Ecology area of ??Barcelona City Council and BIT Hàbitat have called a competition to find innovative solutions to generate ephemeral shadows in the city’s public space. solutions that must be modular, temporary and sustainable.
The period to present projects is open from today until July 14 and it is expected that the winning proposals can be tested in a real environment in the city next year.
The proposals, as reported by the City Council, “will serve to advance urban adaptation and resilience, to improve the thermal comfort of urban space and, thus, guarantee the health of citizens.”
The objective of this urban challenge is to help reduce heat and improve thermal comfort conditions in public spaces. This initiative is designed to especially improve the health and quality of life of the groups most vulnerable to the increasingly frequent heat waves caused by climate change, and to reduce the impact of the heat island effect that occurs in Barcelona in the summer months.
The project aims to influence three different types of spaces in the city: conventional streets, children’s play areas and large-area spaces, such as squares or large avenues.
The contest is open to the participation, individually or in a consortium, of companies, start-ups, research or innovation centers, universities, foundations, associations, cooperatives and consortia made up of different agents.
Through this call, the awarding of prizes to the best proposals will be regulated. The selection of winning projects will be made in the month of September; between October of this year and March 2023 the prototypes will be built and between April and September 2024 the tests will be carried out.
The call will allocate a total of 300,000 euros to give financial support to the best projects, which must have a minimum budget of 80,000 euros and a maximum of 125,000 euros. The selected projects can receive a prize of up to 80% of the eligible costs, with a maximum of 100,000 euros of eligible amount.
