The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore (Maryland, United States) collapsed early this Tuesday after a cargo ship hit it. At the time of the collision, dozens of vehicles were traveling on the structure and fell from a height of about 30 meters into the Patapsco River due to the accident.
According to the AP agency, the accidental collapse occurred around 1:30 a.m. (local time). Both the Baltimore police and the city’s fire department still do not dare to take stock of fatalities or injuries. They have only added that they are trying to rescue at least seven people from the river.
The newspaper The National and other media published a video in which the crash and then the collapse of the central part of the metal bridge can be clearly seen.
As can be seen in the videos – extracted from traffic streams – there are many vehicles affected by the collapse. In addition, it can also be seen how the ship caught fire as soon as it hit the bridge.
The bridge in question is 2.5 kilometers long and is the largest in the Maryland city. “All lanes in both directions of travel have been closed. Traffic is being diverted,” the Maryland Transportation Authority said on X (Twitter).
The city’s mayor, Brandon Scott, also reported in X that he was on his way to the scene of the accident, as were emergency teams.
