Robberies in supermarkets skyrocket in summer. This is indicated by a Checkpoint Systems survey, which also reveals which are the products that people take the most without paying. The most stolen items vary depending on the time of year and each territory. In summer, alcoholic beverages, condoms, ice creams and sun creams stand out.
The company specializing in security elements to combat this type of theft has carried out a survey with a sample of 150,000 stores throughout the Spanish state. In Catalonia, mainly, food is stolen, but in some places in Spain the products have nothing to do with it.
The ranking that Checkpoint Systems has published details that more is stolen at this time of year and what differences there are depending on where it is sought.
In Catalonia, the most stolen products are wines, spirits, sausages and ice cream. I mean, food. On the other hand, on the list for all of Spain we also find items such as sun creams and condoms.
Sun creams are the most stolen products in Andalusia and the Valencian Country, while in Murcia they are flip flops. In Extremadura the mosquito repellent and in Castilla y León the sunglasses. And, on the islands: in the Balearic Islands, makeup and in the Canary Islands, condoms.
In addition, it is striking that, in Asturias and Cantabria, one of the items that people take the most in summer is frozen hake.
Those responsible for the study point out that before there were more thieves who did it out of necessity and self-consumption, but now, in many cases, the stolen products are resold. They calculate that, during the summer months, robberies in supermarkets generate losses of about 170 million euros.
