National Police agents have arrested the director of a cosmetic clinic in Palma for the death of a woman after undergoing two operations at the center. The detainee was in prison for another previous medical negligence, so the agents had to request his release to inform him of this new accusation and then send him back to jail.

The operation took place on September 1 when the woman, of British origin, underwent a cosmetic operation at the clinic. Among the irregularities detected, the researchers found out that, in addition to the initial surgery, the doctors agreed to carry out a second surgery requested by the patient herself moments before entering the operating room.

Apparently, before entering the operating room, the victim asked one of the doctors to take advantage of his entry into the operating room to perform a second cosmetic surgery. The doctors accepted the request even though the patient had not been informed of the risks involved in this second intervention. Another irregularity detected by the researchers is that the patient signed the consents for the scheduled surgery that same morning. The papers were written in Spanish, a language that the woman did not understand.

During the operation, and for reasons that are still being investigated, the victim went into cardio-respiratory arrest and required urgent transfer to the Son Espases University Hospital. After being admitted to the ICU for almost two weeks, on September 13 of last year she died as a result of serious injuries suffered during cardio-respiratory arrest.

The relatives of the deceased filed a complaint with the Police when they understood that malpractice had occurred on the part of the doctors who performed the surgery. On February 9, the doctor, who is also the director of the clinic, was arrested for an alleged crime of homicide due to professional recklessness and another crime of breach of sentence.

As for the other two doctors who participated in the surgery, the investigators charge one of them with the alleged crime of homicide due to professional negligence. The second died two months after the events. The detainee was found to have a special disqualification for the exercise of the healthcare profession, as well as for holding positions of direction or management of healthcare establishments, a disqualification which he ignored when taking part in the surgery carried out on the deceased.
