Pablo Iglesias is full of joy with his new professional career after leaving the world of politics behind. His life has taken a 180 degree turn that has made him go from being vice president of the Government and the visible face of Podemos to opening his own tavern in the Madrid neighborhood of Lavapiés.
The Garibaldi Tavern opened its doors on March 19 and welcomed a crowd that did not want to miss this opening. However, there were many who were disappointed when they did not see the former politician at the inauguration. This adds to the surprise of customers when they saw last Sunday that the store was closed.
“Closed due to a fault in the water pipe. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you very much,” read the sign located on the lowered blind. Some problems that they have had to face very early, despite being a brand new establishment, and that have lasted for several days.
“This Sunday we rest to make one last repair and to supply us with beer that you have run out of again… On Tuesday at 12 we will reopen. Hugs garibaldin@s,” the tavern itself said on its social networks. And it was this Tuesday when it was able to reopen its doors.
A pothole that is not going to make Pablo Iglesias and his partners, the poet Sebastián Fiorilli and the singer-songwriter Carlos Ávila, throw in the towel. And they are clear that they want to continue with their bar inspired by left-wing ideology. “Taverns are the last bastion of freedom of the proletariat,” reads the legend written on the letters, which in turn are accompanied by an illustration by the Marxist philosopher Karl Kautsky and the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi.
So much so, that among their dishes are names like ‘Salmorejo partisan’, the cheeks ‘Brigada Garibaldi’ or the enchiladas ‘Viva Zapata’. This joins other dishes such as the vegan ones named ‘Don’t call me Beef’.
And it is not the only project that Pablo Iglesias has in hand. This same Monday, Jaime Cantizano announced live that the former leader of Podemos was joining the staff of the Mañaneros program on La 1. “Today we add a new mañanero to our political table, pay attention,” he stated. “Pablo Iglesias reappears and does so here, in Mañaneros,” he added.
With this, the former politician has joined other collaborators who have been in the aforementioned space for some time, such as José Manuel García-Margallo, Emma López or Edmundo Bal.
