The coca from Sant Joan falls this year, below Sant Miquel del Fai, transported through the river Tenes, passing through Riells (Vallès Oriental), in a symbolic image after a few months of extreme drought in Catalonia, alleviated by the latest rains .
Even so, now the concern is another in natural areas such as Cingles de Bertí de Sant Miquel del Fai. The Department of the Interior has affirmed that, although the risk of fire before the festival of Sant Joan is “less than last year”, extreme prudence must be exercised.
For this reason, the same restrictions are maintained as in 2022, such as the prohibition of throwing firecrackers within 500 meters of forest mass, among others.
“The situation is not that of last year, but we must not lower our guard. Two years of drought cannot be fixed because it has rained for a few weeks. The forest mass is stressed and we must be careful,” warned the Minister of the Interior , Joan Ignasi Elena.
The areas of the Empordà and the Barcelona and Tarragona coasts are the territories that will experience higher temperatures these days and will therefore suffer a special risk of fire.
For their part, the pastry chefs are confident that this festival of Sant Joan will be “amazing” and will allow sales forecasts for cokes to be exceeded, which stand at 1.8 million units. The fact that the festival falls at the beginning of a weekend with good weather makes it predict “very good” sales.
The classic coca is still the favourite, although the cream and creative cake are gaining ground, incorporating new ingredients and flavors, such as fresh fruit instead of candied, green tea, passion fruit or pistachios.
Now, customers increasingly choose to take “three or four cokes” of smaller size to taste different.
