Beyond clothing, behavior or schedules, one of the biggest cultural clashes between Spaniards and North Americans is food. In Spain we are very accustomed to fresh vegetables and fruit, olive oil, high quality meat, freshly made bread and healthy, good and cheap foods.
In the United States, however, the reality is completely different. Unless you have a medium-high economic level, accessing fresh products can be quite complicated. Most foods arrive packaged from very distant origins.
A Spanish woman has gone viral on TikTok for sharing the strangest products she has found in one of the most iconic supermarkets in the United States, Walmart. User @sheilahernandezalcala has made a compilation of what, in her opinion, is further from what we are used to on the other side of the Atlantic.
To begin with, there are a lot of products in powder or jars when they could be sold in a more natural way: grapefruit in a jar, cheese rolls in cold cuts, powdered iced tea, packaged liver fillets, lasagna in a can, butter from peanut powder…
On the other hand, there are also the strangest combinations: Jack Daniel’s sauce, bacon jam and peanut butter with grape jam are just three of the many examples that Sheila teaches.
For some TikTok users, it is not curious to see all these products, but others have been completely stunned by some of the mixtures sold at Walmart: “I felt like my arteries were clogging just by seeing some foods.”
