Now is a good time to observe the little owls, since they are quite active, as in this case, in Casserres, in Berguedà, where I was able to photograph this specimen for Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia.

The little owl (Athene noctua), despite being a nocturnal bird of prey, can also be seen during the day, especially on old roofs and on electric poles.

The little owl basically hunts small rodents, large insects, small birds and worms. It is a bird that is widespread throughout the southern half of Europe and North Africa, as it is typical of Mediterranean ecosystems with an abundance of olive trees.

It is a sedentary species found in the open in a wide variety of habitats. Among them – on agricultural land with hedges and trees, orchards, forest edges, parks and gardens, as well as stony steppes and semi-deserts.

It is also present in treeless areas, such as dunes, and in the vicinity of ruins, quarries, and rock outcroppings. Sometimes it even goes deep into towns and suburbs.
