The rainbow flag of the LGTBI collective has been displayed since Monday on the balcony of the Town Hall of Puente de Génave (Jaén), the first municipality governed by Vox in the province of Jaén, a decision adopted on the occasion of the celebration of Pride Day.
The mayor of this municipality, Francisco García Avilés, ordered the placement of the banner of the LGTBI collective in the face of the disbelief of his neighbors, who in recent days had seen how the councilor himself was very critical on social networks (with insults included). towards the people of the LGTBI collective.
In addition, the almost unprecedented gesture of this mayor is contrary to the theses defended by Vox at the national level, since the party has knocked down in numerous city councils the institutional declarations on the occasion of Pride Day.
Although there are neighbors who have applauded the fact that the flag flies on the balcony of the Town Hall, criticism has not been lacking either: “One flag, many insults and no value, mayor. What great cynicism ”, the municipal PSOE has written on social networks.
Puente de Génave (2,175 inhabitants) is the first municipality governed by Vox in the province of Jaén. Its mayor, Francisco García Avilés, governs with an absolute majority, achieving 49.16% of the votes and six councilors. For its part, the PSOE, which was in charge of the municipal government for three decades, achieved 35.10% of the votes and four councilors and the PP, 14.93% and one representative.
The far-right group has gone from five councilors in 2019 in three municipalities in the province of Jaén to a total of 28 councilors in 16 towns in the province of Jaén.
