FC Barcelona and Samuel Umtiti have reached an agreement to terminate the contract that the player had with the club until the end of the 2025-26 season. With his departure agreed with financial compensation, the entity releases one of the highest chips and manages to lighten his exceeded salary mass.
Although in January 2022 Barça renewed his contract until 2026, three years more than what was stipulated and in a pact that meant that the Frenchman would lower his token, Umtiti was going to cost Barcelona this course 20 million. The Frenchman was returning from Italy after playing on loan at Italian Lecce and he was still not part of Xavi’s plans.
Barça hoped to be able to transfer him but they have finally reached a contract termination agreement. On the table he has the interest of Olympique de Lyon, the club in which he was formed, but also of other competitive teams in Italy.
In this way, Umtiti closes a seven-year stage as a Barça footballer, although this last year he played on loan in Serie A with Lecce on loan. With the Italian team he has managed to rediscover himself with a good footballing and physical level, playing a total of 25 games.
The Frenchman landed in Barcelona in the summer of 2016, coming from Olympique de Lyon, the only club he had played for as a professional so far. In the 2016-17 season he played 43 matches and added another 40 in 2017-18. However, after being world champion with France in the summer of 2018, a series of serious injuries diminished his presence in the Barça eleven. In total, in the following four seasons, Umtiti played 50 games, before going on loan to Italy. Umtiti leaves the club with two Leagues, three Cups and two Super Cups to his credit.
