Pedro Sánchez’s coalition is studying the presentation of the Popular Party’s electoral program before the Electoral Board for the 23rd elections, due to the fact that images of the Moncloa Palace were shown. Members of the PSOE consider that the presentation that accompanies the candidacy of Alberto Núñez Feijóo violates the electoral law because it includes institutional symbols in its content.
During the presentation, the popular candidate made an intervention from a lectern while behind him were projected photographs of the building of the Council of Ministers of the La Moncloa Complex. Members of the socialist party have shared: “It seems to us that the intention is deliberately to confuse the voter by using symbols and images that do not correspond to the current political situation of Feijóo.”
In the event that the PSOE denounces the presentation of the PP before the Board, this will be the second time this week that the party appeals to the JEC. On Monday the coalition petitioned the electoral body to censor a banner installed in Madrid on Atocha street by the Desokupa company. Where, a photo of Sánchez appears accompanied by the phrase: “You to Morocco, Desokupa to Moncloa”.
At election time, a recurring theme is the protocol for the use of official symbols in campaign events. Organic Law 5/1985, of June 19, on the General Electoral Regime indicates that in the presentation of candidacies and electoral programs of the parties, symbols that “reproduce the flag, the coat of arms of Spain or that refer to the Crown”.
In the same way, the regulations prohibit including in the presentations and proclamation of candidates “denominations, acronyms or symbols” that lead to confusion “with those belonging to or traditionally used by other constituted parties.”
