A man has been arrested this afternoon in Logroño as the alleged perpetrator of the murder of his wife, after which he would have tried to drown their three children in common, all minors, in the Ebro river. According to sources of the investigation cited by Efe, the detainee has acknowledged the facts.
The murder occurred around 3:30 p.m. this Saturday, on the second floor of number 1 of Plaza Martínez Flamarique in the capital of La Rioja, to where agents of the National and Local Police have moved after receiving a notice about a possible case of sexist violence.
The 44-year-old man was arrested in the area known as La Isla, next to the Ebro River, when he tried to drown the children. Several witnesses have notified the National Police when they saw that a man had thrown himself into the river.
A couple of patrols approached the place and when speaking with him, he reported that his wife could be dead at their home. Agents of the Local and National Police have arrived at the home and, after opening the door, they have found the 34-year-old woman, bled to death. The Government Delegation in La Rioja has indicated that there are no previous complaints of mistreatment or other types of violence.
Some of the neighbors have pointed out to journalists their surprise at what happened, since it seemed like a family without problems of these characteristics. The detainee and the victim are of Syrian origin, they had been in Logroño for eight years.
The mayor of the city, Conrado Escobar, has come to the address where the event occurred and the Logroño City Council will activate the city’s mourning protocol on sexist violence.

The Government delegate in La Rioja, Beatriz Arraiz, has expressed her condemnation and rejection of this possible murder due to gender violence and has transferred all her support to the family and friends of the victim.
So far, the Ministry of Equality has confirmed a total of 25 sexist murders so far this year -1,209 since 2003- and there are two more cases under investigation. According to data provided by this department, 26 minors have lost their mothers due to gender violence.
