A climate change denialist hunter will be the new Minister of the Environment of the Consell de Mallorca, as well as vice president of this institution. The president of the Consell, Llorenç Galmés, has announced this Tuesday the government team of the institution, in which Bestard appears as vice president and councilor of Medi Ambient, Medi Rural and Esports. Bestard has been president of the Hunting Federation until a few weeks ago, a position he left pending his entry into the island government.
In a statement to Onda Cero, the new head of Medi Ambient acknowledged that he does not believe in climate change. “We do not believe that it is a climate change; we are sure that this is a power factor of some companies that want to take the world to a place where they are interested,” he said on this station a few days ago. “Sustainability is one thing and climate change another. One thing is one thing and the other is the other; we do not have to mix, I agree with the fact that there are photovoltaics, but one thing does not mean the other,” he added.
Bestard is part of the government of the Consell de Mallorca after the agreement signed between the PP and Vox in the Balearic Islands. The ultranationalist party will not be in the Balearic Government, in the hands of Marga Prohens, but instead it will be part of the island governments of Mallorca and Menorca. After the distribution of portfolios announced by the president of the institution, Bestard will manage the competitions in the field of environment, hunting and waste, as well as sports. Another Vox representative, Pilar Amate, will lead the competitions for economic promotion and local development.
The Consell de Mallorca will have an environmental portfolio, unlike the Government of Marga Prohens, where the powers of the Ministry have been diluted into various departments, so there will not be an Environmental department as the team of Francina Armengol. Prohens will govern alone, with a program agreed with Vox in which there are hardly any references to climate change.
Unlike what has happened in Murcia, the PP-Vox agreement in the Balearic Islands has allowed the establishment of the institutions of the Islands. Prohens has already designed his team of ministers, in which there is a combination of historical PP members with new additions and two independents, and in the Consell de Mallorca the government team has already been closed with two Vox representatives with executive power.
One of the challenges of the Government of Marga Prohens has to do with Catalan since the agreement with Abascal’s party implies the obligation to establish freedom of choice of language in all stages of public education. Prohens has put a moderate at the head of the Ministry of Education, Antoni Vera, a graduate in Catalan Philology, who will have to balance to avoid the large protests caused by the language policy of the former Balearic president of the PP, José Ramón Bauzá, with 100,000 people in the streets, the largest demonstration in the history of the Balearic Islands.
