The presence of wild boars in the streets of the cities, looking for food in containers, is an increasingly common scenario in Catalonia. In recent years, the number of people who see their day to day affected by this problem has grown a lot.
Montserrat Riera, a neighbor of Riells and Vilabrea (la Selva), has explained to El món to RAC1 that a month ago she was attacked by a wild boar while she was walking the dog down the street. He bit her arm and they had to sew 15 stitches on her. “Many Riells residents are afraid to leave their homes for fear of wild boars,” she said.
On June 8, Montserrat was calmly walking the dog through the town when she was suddenly attacked by a wild boar. She was a female accompanied by 10 pups. The animal pounced on her, and when she tried to protect herself from it, she bit his left arm.
When she was able to recover, she went to the pharmacy and there they called an ambulance, which took her to the Josep Trueta Hospital. “At the hospital they told me that she had been very lucky because she had not affected any artery or tendon,” she says.
As we read in the report that the hospital made with the injuries, the dimensions of the bite were more than 10 cm and to cure him they had to sew more than 15 stitches. After a month of care he has already recovered and this Tuesday he was discharged.
Montserrat explains that his is “the most brutal attack that has occurred so far in the town” and that has spread fear among the residents. “My case is the one that has raised all the alarms. There are people who have had scares, but not of that magnitude,” she assured.
Montserrat has admitted that the growing presence of wild boars in the streets is causing many older people to panic about leaving their homes. “I don’t know what the solution is, but the Administration must get its act together,” she concluded.
The mayor of Riells and Vilabrea, Josep Maria Bagot, assured RAC1 in El món that the City Council does not have the powers to act, but it has provided all possible tools to deal with the situation.
The mayor reveals that they have contacted the Rural Agents many times, but no one is clear on how to remedy this problem. He also asks the neighbors not to give food to the wild boars, since this is a claim for them.
