The Medicine degree (Campus Clínic) taught at the UB is the highest cut-off mark -of the studies that offer more than 40 places- for university access in Catalonia with 13,040 (13,240 in 2022). With regard to degrees with an offer of less than 40 places, the most requested study, and for the 12th consecutive year, is the double degree in Physics and Mathematics that is taught at the UAB with a required grade of 13,436 ( 13,536 in 2022).
Once again, and as in previous years, the most requested study centers are once again those that offer degrees in the field of health sciences (medicine, psychology, nursing and dentistry) and in fields such as business administration and management , law and architecture.
The degree in greatest demand has been Medicine (Campus Clínic) which is taught at the UB and which has the highest cut-off mark. It offers 200 places and has had a demand of 1,668 applications. After him comes Psychology, also offered at the UB (1,167 applications for 432 places) and Business Administration and Management (also taught at the UB), with 780 places and 1,013 applications.
In this sense, Laura Román Martín, general secretary of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia (CIC) has highlighted that, “this year, all the centers corresponding to Medicine increase their offer of places. Beyond the three that appear among the 10 most requested centers in first preference, in the overall Catalan university system, this next academic year 2023-2024 another 146 places are offered, which represents an increase of 12%”.
82.95% (47,501 students) of pre-registered students to access degree studies at one of the seven Catalan public universities (UB, UAB, UPC, UPF, UdL, URV and UdG) and at the University of Vic- Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC) already has a place assigned (80.87% in 2022). Of these, 62.80% (29,830) have been able to access the degree they requested as their first preference (60.23% last year). In this year’s process, a total of 57,263 students have pre-registered (57,413 in 2022).
The students assigned to the different universities are: 11,998 in the UB; 9,716 in the UAB; 6,763 in the UPC; 4,167 in the UPF; 3,146 in the UdL; 4,334 in the UdG; 3,867 in the URV; 3,065 in the UVic-UCC, and 445 in mixed centres.
“We are in luck because the percentage of students who have obtained a place in this first assignment has increased again. It has done so by two points, a significant figure,” said Román Martín. “The percentage of those who have obtained the first preference assignment has also increased by two points. All this means that we have been able to give a more satisfactory response to the demands of all the students who have pre-registered this year in the university system of Catalonia “, has added.
After the degree in Medicine (Campus Clínic) taught at the UB, the degrees -with more than 40 places offered- with the most demanding cut-off grade are Medicine at UPF (12,980); Mathematics at the UPC (12,925); Medicine (Campus Bellvitge) taught at the UB (12,893); Medicine at the URV (12,768); and Medicine at the UAB (12,713).
There are up to four double degrees in the top 10 of the highest cutoff notes. The aforementioned Physics and Mathematics at the UAB (13,436); the same degree taught at the UB (13,318); Law and International Relations offered at the UAB (13,084); and Computer Engineering and Mathematics taught at the UB (12,920).
The cut-off mark depends directly on the number of places offered by a degree and the demand of students. In studies with a cut-off grade of 5, what happens is that these grades have not covered all the places offered in the first assignment.
The circumstance occurs this year (mainly due to the interaction between supply and demand) that all the degrees that occupy the top 10 of the highest cut-off marks (except the double degree in Law and International Relations taught at the UAB, which was not among the ten highest qualifications last year) have a slightly lower cut-off mark than in 2022 in this first assignment.
This decrease is not exclusive to the degrees that are in the top 10. In up to 50.19% of the studies offered (268) the grade decreases. It rises by 142 (26.6%) and remains at 124 (23.2%).
Regarding the profile of the applicants, a total of 47,677 come from the PAU and Higher Level Training Cycles (50,016 in 2022); there are 1,419 university students (1,394 by 2022) who want to take a second degree; the students coming from the tests for people over 25 and 45 years old are 828 (767 to 2022); and the number of university students who have requested a change of degree study has been 7,339 in this call (5,236 in 2022).
