Correos has received a total of 627,989 requests to vote by mail for these general elections to be held on July 23 in the Community of Madrid, a record number that represents an increase of 269.9% compared to the number of Madrid residents who exercised their right to vote by mail in the region in the past regional and municipal elections on May 28.

Of the total number of applications registered in the Community, the majority, 454,877, have been submitted in person at the post office network and 173,112 electronically through the Correos website.

In this way, voting by mail in the region grows 269.9% compared to 28M, when 186,952 people from Madrid used this system, and 430.3% over the figures of the last general elections of 2019, with 118,418 votes for this modality.

At the national level, 2,622,808 requests to vote by mail have been registered for these general elections on July 23, a record number since there are records of this voting system, although as of this Friday a total has yet to be delivered of 737,585 electoral documents to voters, which must be provided until this Sunday, July 16, when the term for this purpose ends.

According to the data provided by Correos after this Thursday, July 13, the deadline for requesting votes by mail ended, more than 2.6 million in total have been validated, although 1,885,223 documents have been delivered to voters.

Correos has until Sunday, July 16, to deliver the envelope with all the necessary documentation -including the ballots- at the address indicated by the applicant. Postal workers will try to personally deliver the documentation to the voter up to a maximum of two times. After that, they will leave a notice of arrival for collection at the corresponding post office.

Once the vote has been requested, the voter will have until Thursday, July 20 -although the Post Office does not rule out extending it- to deposit the documentation in any office. There, the Post Office workers will require the voter to identify himself with the DNI or a similar document.

In any case, the data on applications to vote by mail for this 23-J represent a record number compared to other years for which data are available, since they are 94.71% more than the 2019 elections and a 80.45% more than those of 2016, which until today were the ones that set the historical record.

Specifically, in the 2016 elections, which were also held at the gates of summer, Correos received 1,452,988 requests for this voting system, one million less than the requests that occurred in these elections on 23-J.

The data for applications to vote by mail for 23-J are also much higher compared to the previous general elections, since in April 2019 more than 1.2 million chose this voting system and slightly less than one million in the electoral repetition of November 10.

It should be remembered that Correos will open its offices this weekend to facilitate voting by mail throughout Spain, with hours from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Madrid, Barcelona and several tourist cities, and it does not rule out extending the deadline for the deposit of the suffrage, set so far for Thursday, July 20.
