Life on two wheels offers unique sensations, and there are pets that also add to this experience. Traveling by motorcycle with a sidecar for the furry one in the house is a practice that, although not very common, can be seen on the roads.
Alexandra Bedoya and Daniel Cano are two Colombians who have decided to tour the South American country on a motorcycle with Hela and Max, two four-legged friends who have not missed a trip since 2021. This initiative is called Rolling on Footprints.
This family seeks to inspire more people to travel with their pets, proving that limitations can be overcome. Although, obviously, they have had to prepare everything perfectly so that the husky and the German shepherd can travel safely.
In this sense, the couple has equipped their motorcycle with a type of sidecar specially designed so that the dogs can be comfortable during the journey. Thus, they can show their heads, but it is impossible for them to remove the rest of the body.
Traveling by motorcycle with pets in Spain is legal under specific conditions that ensure the safety of all road users. The General Traffic Regulations establish that the driver must maintain freedom of movement, a clear field of vision and constant attention to driving, which implies that the presence of the pet should not interfere with these essential capabilities.
Although there are no detailed regulations for transporting pets on motorcycles, it is crucial that any method used—such as trailers, sidecars, or harnesses—does not compromise the safety of the driver or the pet. Failure to comply with these rules can lead to fines ranging from 80 euros for minor distractions to 500 euros and the loss of 6 license points for reckless behavior on the road.
For pets that weigh more than 12 kilos – as is the case of Colombian dogs – the use of a sidecar is recommended, as long as the animal is properly trained to avoid accidents. This precaution seeks to ensure the safety and well-being of pets during the trip, while complying with current legislation.
