On the road, the safer the better. And if on top of that we have the blessing of San Cristóbal… That’s what the drivers who have come to the church of Sant Cristòfol de Vespella, in Osona, have gone looking for, to attend mass, vermouth and, finally, the blessing of their vehicles, as can be seen in this report in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia.
San Cristóbal is known because he is the patron saint of travelers and, by extension, of motorists. In July he is honored with vehicle blessing ceremonies, like this one in Sant Cristòfol de Vespella.
Sant Cristòfol de Vespella is one of the four parishes of the extensive municipality of Gurb, where we also find Sant Julià Sassorba, Sant Andreu de Gurb and Sant Esteve de Granollers de la Plana.
Patron of the muleteers, later of the truckers and today of all drivers in general, San Cristóbal stages the awareness of the responsibility of all motorists on the road. And, at the same time, he is like a kind of “guardian angel”, whose stamp is common to carry inside the vehicle.
Legend has it that this saint had the job of porter, who was in charge of transporting people from shore to shore of the rivers without drowning.
