There was a time when swimwear was basic and uniform. In the fifties, when the first bikini arrived in Spain, neutral colors and patterns, woven in polyester and nylon, prevailed on the beaches. However, swimwear is currently undergoing a continuous conversion partly due to the birth of thousands of low-cost swimwear brands but also artisan firms that seek to create more sustainable designs.
There are no rules, no valid codes. There are as many styles, patterns and ways to wear a bikini as there are stores specializing in this summer garment, and yet every year we search the celebrity poses for a pattern, a trend capable of shedding some light and separating what is worn this season of what has been discontinued.
From Nicolas Gesquière’s catwalk to Louis Vuitton, Moschino, Emporio Armani and Jaquemus, swimwear this season draws on the mermaidcore trend – pieces that simulate mermaid scales or include elements that evoke the sea– through a bright and innovative fabric. The bikini made of metallic fabrics such as lurex or glitter-dipped polyester becomes the king of the seas. This is confirmed by celebs such as the Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio or the influencer Chiara Ferragni. The first, with a lilac metallic triangular bikini that lights up with the reflection of the sun and enhances her tan. The second one also succumbs to the shine effect with a two-piece with a tricolor bra with underwire and covered in lurex.

From her extensive collection of bikinis, the model Kendall Jenner chose a mini model in May, striped and wrinkled effect to open the bathing season and the British artist Dua Lipa opted for the same mission for a cheerful floral print design . From both choices emerges another of the great trends that has dominated swimwear for several seasons now. It is the predilection of the famous for the Brazilian panties or high-cut thong, a design of dubious comfort that, however, is the best option for those who seek to highlight the curves and avoid the unsightly marks left by the contrast with the tan.
Although the two-piece swimsuit is unquestionably the favorite of celebrities and the general consumer, the one-piece swimsuit has gained ground this year as a sophisticated, comfortable and versatile piece. The one-piece swimsuit evokes this year the so-called silent luxury that obsesses the fashion industry and is worn both in basic colors and combined with jewels, as well as, as shown by the singer Aitana, to enjoy a day on the boat, with fun prints.
Asymmetry and halter necks represent one of the latest and most important trends in this summer style manual, as is combining beachwear with the swimwear in question. The pareo, dress or fabric pants to match the bikini or swimsuit is a must for those who seek to follow fashion and its trends.
And although men still innovate little in terms of swimwear, it should be noted that this 2023 there is a clear predisposition on the part of this public to dare with fluorine tones, such as those worn by Chino Darín, and strident prints, as shown by Maluma on Instagram, in addition to trying more sophisticated and fresh fabrics. A range of possibilities makes its way into the most refreshing wardrobes.
