Pedro Sánchez assures every day that in this legislature he had to “seek votes from under the stones” to approve his agenda of reforms and advances in rights and freedoms. But, already in the final stretch of this electoral campaign, the leader of the PSOE is determined to scratch every last seat at stake throughout Spain to try to prevent a majority that allows Alberto Núñez Feijóo to evict him from Moncloa.
This was evidenced by the President of the Government last Monday, when he was absent from the dinner held in Brussels on the occasion of the summit between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), to star in an improvised meeting on the run in Huesca . And so he made it clear again yesterday, when a delay of more than three hours on the initially scheduled schedule forced Sánchez to leave Brussels again in a hurry, without attending the final joint appearance of the summit, to star in a rally in San Sebastián, where the socialists fight for the seat that dances.
Like the day before in Huesca, the leader of the PSOE also arrived late yesterday at the meeting in San Sebastián. But just in time to announce “the minute and result”, in his opinion, of this campaign, already just five days before the appointment with the polls on 23-J. “The right installed in the lie and we in the comeback,” he assured before the 1,500 supporters, according to the organization’s figure, crowded in the Kursaal auditorium.
Sánchez appeared in Euskadi, in any case, as the only containment dam against the emergence of the Popular Party and the extreme right of Vox. “The right and the extreme right have one objective: the setback. And they have an obsession: the PSOE, ”he assured.
And if they fear the PSOE, he resolved, it is because it is the “only one that can stop them and the only one that can accelerate progress over the next four years.”
The President of the Government particularly drew attention to the warning issued yesterday by the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, when he predicted that “what is going to happen in Catalonia if they govern with the PP is going to be even worse than what happened in the 2017”. “Spain is much better than Feijóo and Abascal, and that is why we are going to win the elections,” he stressed. “Because Spain has to always look ahead and not recover its worst moments,” he replied to Abascal.
Sánchez also took the opportunity to challenge Feijóo to attend tonight the last electoral debate of the campaign, organized by RTVE, which will meet him with Abascal and Yolanda Díaz, but to which the PP leader will not attend. The chief executive insisted on denouncing “the lies and manipulations” that he attributes to the opposition leader, after his statements about the revaluation of pensions or the agreements with Vox. “This policy is called the policy of the lie,” criticized Sánchez. “Feijóo has a great opportunity to clarify those lies by going to the debate that we are going to have on RTVE. He has the great opportunity to clarify all the lies about him by going to the debate that we are going to celebrate on public television! ”, He exclaimed.
The PSOE leader insisted, despite the majority of polling forecasts, that “victory is closer.” And he celebrated the “so formidable mobilization” of the socialist militancy in recent days. In an electoral video also released yesterday, Sánchez called on militants and supporters to “keep pushing” until 23-J.
And, at the same time, a large representation of former socialist ministers from the governments of Felipe González and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero yesterday signed another manifesto of support for Sánchez. Among the signatories, Javier Solana and José Bono, Joaquín Almunia and Manuel Chaves, Ramón Jáuregui and Carlos Solchaga, José Montilla, Narcís Serra and Joan Clos.
