Nikola Mirotic is now officially history at Barça basketball, but he won’t leave in a friendly way. FC Barcelona communicated this Thursday to the player’s legal representatives the decision to unilaterally terminate the two years remaining on the Spanish-Montenegrin power forward’s contract, until June 30, 2025.
In this way, the definitive solution to the conflict now passes through the courts, where the compensation that Barça will have to pay to Mirotic for the two pending years will have to be established.
As reported by the Blaugrana club in a brief statement, the measure to dispense with the services of one of the best players in Europe responds “to compliance with the economic viability plan” that the entity has set for the next two seasons.
The legal process is now open, as the parties have not reached an amicable agreement to terminate the contract. Barça is going to provision itself with 22 million euros, which is precisely the amount that it owed to Mirotic for the two years of the pending contract.
For his part, the Spanish-Montenegrin player now has 20 days to formally denounce Barça for unfair dismissal. In the event that the claim is admitted (as it should be), both parties will be heard and a judgment will be issued. If there are no objective reasons for the dismissal (as everything indicates), the compensation could be close to the 22 million euros that the club owes the player.
After losing in the Euroleague Final Four against Real Madrid in Kaunas, Barça informed Mirotic that they could no longer assume the cost of his record, of around 11 million euros per season.
The player said goodbye to the Barça fans by winning the Endesa League, of which he was MVP, also against the white team. And since then, his contractual separation was pending.
In fact, his representative, Igor Crespo, revealed that the club had not officially communicated the dismissal to the player and that this cost Barça 31,000 euros a day.
While there is still no friendly agreement for the termination of the contract, Mirotic continues to negotiate his new destination, which could be Partizan Belgrade.
