Insecurity continues to be the main problem in the city of Barcelona ahead of dirt and problems with access to affordable housing. This is clear from the 2023 Municipal Services Survey that the City Council has just made public. These three items also hold the top positions for citizen problems in another municipal survey, the post-election barometer presented today by the Barcelona City Council.
The Services Survey, a macro survey made from 6,000 interviews between January 19 and April 17, when Ada Colau was still the mayoress of Barcelona, ??precisely places the improvement of security, cleanliness and access to housing as the three main demands of the people of Barcelona to their City Council. Specifically, 13.7% ask the municipal government to act above all to reduce levels of insecurity, 13.5% to improve the cleanliness of the city and 8.5% to facilitate access to housing.
This survey, which is carried out every year, indicates in its 2023 edition that insecurity is the main problem facing the Catalan capital. This is the opinion of 22.7% of those interviewed. On the other hand, 13.2% consider that if there is something to worry about, it is because of the dirt in public spaces. In third position in the ranking of concerns of Barcelonans is access to housing (9.6%), followed by traffic congestion, economic problems, pollution, works and tourism, in that order.
Asked about the problems that most affect them personally, those interviewed mentioned first those of an economic nature (14.9%), followed by citizen insecurity (10.9%), unemployment and working conditions (9.8%) and housing (7.6%).
The other survey presented today by the City Council, the barometer carried out between May 30 and June 8, that is, from just after the municipal elections and a week before the inauguration of the new mayor, gives very similar results. The list of problems is headed by insecurity (26.67%), followed by housing (11.6%), dirt (9.9%) and tourism (5.9%).
The satisfaction expressed by the people of Barcelona for living in their city remains very high. Out of 10 interviewees give it a score of 7.2 in the Services Survey, somewhat lower than the 7.4 in the 2022 edition of the same survey.
With regard to the management of the governments of the different levels of the administration, that of the Barcelona City Council, at that time chaired by Ada Colau and with the support of the PSC, obtained the highest score, 5.7 out of 10, the same as in the 2022 survey. The Government of the Generalitat received a grade of 5.6 and the Spanish Government of Pedro Sánchez approved with a 5.1.
The Services Survey places firefighters as the best valued service by Barcelonans for yet another year, with a score of 8 out of 10. Public libraries are listed with 7.8. followed by civic centers (7.2); the markets, the metro, the tram, the bus and the cultural activities, all of them with a rating of 7.2. Approved scratched for the management of citizen security and only two suspenses, for circulation (4.9) and for parking (3.9).
