Mexican journalist and writer Lydia Cacho was kidnapped in her country in 2005 after publishing Los demonios del Eden, an investigation into a pedophile ring in Cancun. Now Cacho lives in Spain and, together with José Martret, she has turned the story of her kidnapping “and the modus operandi of a government complicit in corruption and violence” into a play, La infamia
During the last two years, the show has toured several Spanish theaters with the actresses Marta Nieto and Mariana Salas as protagonists and with great public success. So the Toledo City Council hired her to represent her on December 15 at the Teatro Rojas. But that was at the beginning of this exercise, when the PSOE governed the city.
In the municipal elections in May, the tables were turned and now the PP governs in Toledo with the support of Vox. The new municipal Executive has decided to cancel the representation of La infamia and Cacho has accused him of “censorship”.
“Not only have they suspended Infamy, they are also canceling other works and they are censoring books because they believe they affect good morals,” the writer pointed out in a video that she posted on her Twitter account.
“When it is considered that the good customs of a country go through the silencing of pedophilia, violence against women, torture, disappearances and mafias allied with governments, we have a major problem,” added the author in reference to the theme of La infamia that will no longer be performed in Toledo.
In addition, Cacho has denounced that the “censorship” against this work “takes away from society the tools to defend itself from all violence, which begins in girls. The seeds of all violence, gender, sexual diversity… begin in girls. When adults attack children, they sow the violence of inequality, violence and all values ??against democracy”.
“That is why we are truly concerned,” stressed the writer, who has found support in the ranks of the socialist opposition in the Toledo consistory. The councilors of the PSOE consider that the work has fallen from the poster for “ideological issues.”
Meanwhile, the popular municipal government assures that La infamia will not be represented due to a much more prosaic issue: the lack of budget. The controversial work was not yet contracted, since it is common for programs to be made at the beginning of the year but that the contracts are not signed until a few weeks before the date of the performance.
Thus, the popular councilor Marisol Illescas explained that “given the scarcity of resources, which are not unlimited, we have preferred to prioritize.” “There is no censorship or cancellation of the work, there had simply been some conversations, some email exchanges and a market test”, added the PP mayor, reports Europa Press.
Meanwhile, the socialist Ana Abellán has insisted that the matter is “exclusively ideological” and has stated that “there was an economic item of 7,400 euros to offer that representation.” “We had studied it very carefully”, added Abellán, who considers that cancellations such as that of La infamia are “a constant of the governments where the ultra-right has entered hand in hand with the PP”.
