Mexican journalist and writer Lydia Cacho was kidnapped in 2005 in her country after publishing Los demonios del Edén, an investigation into a pedophilia ring in Cancun. Cacho now lives in Spain and, with José Martret, has turned the story of his kidnapping and the modus operandi of a government complicit in corruption and violence” into a play, La infamia
During the last two years, the function has toured several Spanish theaters with the actresses Marta Nieto and Mariana Salas as protagonists and with great success. Toledo City Council hired her to perform on December 15 at the Teatro Rojas. But that was at the beginning of this year, when the PSOE was in power in the city.
In the municipal elections in May, the rounds changed and now the PP with the support of Vox governs in Toledo. The new municipal executive has decided to cancel the representation of La infamia and Cacho has accused him of “censorship”.
“They have not only suspended La infamia, they are also canceling other works and are censoring books because they believe they affect good manners”, the writer pointed out in a video she posted on her Twitter account.
“When it is considered that the good customs of a country pass through the silencing of pederasty, violence against women, torture, disappearances and mafias allied with governments, we have a major problem”, he added ‘author with reference to the theme of La infamia, which will no longer be performed in Toledo.
In addition, Cacho has denounced that the “censorship” against this work “takes away from society the tools to defend itself against all violence, which begins with girls. The seeds of all violence, of gender, of sexual diversity… start with girls. When adults assault children, they sow the violence of inequality, violence and all values ??against democracy.”
“That’s why we’re really worried”, replied the writer, who has found support in the ranks of the socialist opposition in the Toledo Consistory. The councilors of the PSOE consider that the work has fallen from the poster due to “ideological issues”.
Meanwhile, the popular municipal government assures that La infamia will not be represented because of a much more prosaic issue: the lack of budget. The controversial work had not yet been contracted, as it is usual for the programs to be made at the beginning of the year, but for the contracts not to be signed until a few weeks before the date of the performance.
The popular councilor Marisol Illescas explained that “given the scarcity of resources, which are not unlimited, we have preferred to prioritize”. “There is no censorship or cancellation of the work, there were simply conversations, e-mail exchanges and market testing”, added the PP councillor, reports Europa Press.
Meanwhile, the socialist Ana Abellán has insisted that the affair is “exclusively ideological” and has affirmed that “there was an economic item of 7,400 euros to offer this representation”. “We had studied it very carefully”, added Abellán, who considers that cancellations like that of La infamia are “a constant of the governments where the ultra-right has entered with the PP”.
