The opposition of the Generalitat to the expansion of the Camiral Golf and Wellness with a new golf course, a club house and a building for athletes – according to the organizers – has left the celebration of the Ryder Cup in the air these facilities in 2031. Despite this, the organizers will visit the facilities next week to explore all options and see if the project can be rethought before deciding on a new location for this international competition; the most likely, Madrid.
The Girona employers’ association yesterday expressed its “surprise and displeasure” with the Government’s decision not to authorize the third field in a statement. “This event goes far beyond tourism and is a unique opportunity to promote Girona on a global scale, a very relevant project that represents a great occasion in the economic and business sphere”. The employer insists that they have worked for a long time on this project and highlights the support received from various administrations, including the Spanish Government, the deputations of Barcelona and Girona or the Spanish and Catalan golf federations.
The Generalitat alleges the context of drought and Government sources maintain that they are not against the celebration of the Ryder Cup in Catalonia, but they are against building a new golf course (claiming that there are 92 in Catalonia) and the expansion of the Caldes facilities, which cover an additional 150 hectares.
