Vox has opened the door to a new path in the labyrinth of the investiture of the next prime minister. The ultra-nationalists said in writing yesterday that they offer their 33 deputies to the Popular Party without any kind of consideration, without any red line; without conditions With the sole aim of trying to prevent Pedro Sánchez from being invested with the votes “of all the enemies of Spain”. After making the announcement public, Alberto Núñez Feijóo picked up the gauntlet -almost in sync- and thanked Vox for the change in attitude, which he described as “an advance” in his bid for an executive “alone from the Popular Party, based on a broad and constitutional agreement”.
Those from Santiago Abascal are not giving up when it comes to continuing to build bridges with Genoa. The management is clear that its partner in this journey must be the PP, despite the fact that the president of the conservatives has described them as “unreliable partners” during the electoral campaign. Vox, which has extended its hand to them since election night, extended a little more yesterday, despite the fact that the offer they have made – for now – seems to be facing the gallery, since the parliamentary arithmetic is done almost impossible for the block on the right.
Through a statement, Vox denounced that the re-election of a government led by Pedro Sánchez would constitute “a serious threat to the constitutional order and coexistence, with the possibility of granting a referendum on self-determination”. Something that, according to the ultras, would amount to “a coup d’état” that would lead to “a breakdown of coexistence and social peace”. The solution that Vox proposes to this supposed catastrophic scenario that it draws on the horizon requires offering its 33 deputies to “a constitutional majority”.
In the document, Vox takes the opportunity to recall a phrase from Santiago Abascal: “We will not be an obstacle to avoid a government of national destruction”. These statements were made in an interview made public on July 26, the day he secretly met with the popular leader. A quote that remained hidden until Vox leaked it to the media as a response to the words of the Andalusian president, Juanma Moreno, when he assured that Vox “is more frightening to the electorate than ERC and Bildu”. The anger was capital at the corner of Carrer Bambú where Vox has its headquarters.
Sources from the party explain that this offer without any red lines opens up several scenarios – with different levels of success – in the political board on which the investiture is addressed. The former responds by giving Feijóo an oxygen tank “so he doesn’t give up” on trying to be installed as president, despite the fact that they consider this move “practically improbable”. This new path would require trying to convince the PNB and Coalició Canària, despite the fact that the Basque nationalists have already shown their rejection of Feijóo, whom Andoni Ortuzar said was like “a return to Aznar’s PP”. “What had to be said was already said on July 24, in other words everything remains the same”, PNB sources warned this issue yesterday to this newspaper, reports Ander Goyoaga, and made it clear that there is no backtracks on his refusal to agree with the PP.
The second scenario requires officializing the intention to approach positions in the next legislature, which opens with a first stop at the constitution of the Bureau of Congress, on the 17th. After yesterday’s movement, which was answered well favored by the Popular Party, the right could prevent the left from having a majority in the governing body of the chamber -whose control is vital to set the parliamentary rhythms-, something added to the absolute majority of the Popular Party in the Senate, could turn the legislative procedures of the left into an ordeal, if it manages to revalidate the government. A right-wing front that could be immortalized in Feijóo’s investiture session. If it fails, in that snapshot it would not be portrayed with the solitude of 137 deputies, but with, at least, 170 seats.
