The PP tempts the Canary Islands Coalition in search of 172 supports to achieve a simple majority in a possible investiture. In the absence of eight days for the important votes of the Table of the Congress of Deputies, the national leadership of the party chaired by Alberto Núñez Feijóo has advanced today that in the coming days there will be “meetings” with the Canarian formation, with whom they have already arrived to an agreement in the government of the archipelago, with the aim of obtaining the favorable vote of its only deputy in the Lower House. If Cristina Valido ends up opting to support the popular, Pedro Sánchez would need Junts to vote in favor of her investiture and it would not be worth it only with his abstention.
For the PP, there have been “important advances” on the political board in recent years that have led to an extraordinary call for the steering committee. Three, specifically. The first novelty is the availability of Vox to offer its 33 deputies so that the PP can govern alone. Secondly, that UPN has already confirmed its willingness to support an investiture by Feijóo. With the yeses of these two parties, the popular president has 171 seats in his favor. The third is the Canary route.
Genoa has optimistically assessed the initial position of the Canarian formation, which opened up to support Feijóo if Vox did not enter a hypothetical Government. For the PP, “that CC has advanced its willingness to support an investiture” is a novelty to take into account.
“These days we will hold meetings with CC to advance the Canarian agenda”, explained the general secretary, Cuca Gamarra. In other words, Feijóo is launching himself for the coveted seat 172. The also spokesperson for the parliamentary group in the Lower House during the last legislature has recalled that to achieve an investiture in the second round, a simple majority would be needed, more votes in favor than against .
The PP has also confirmed this Wednesday that Feijóo will appear at an investiture session if the head of state entrusts him with it after the round of consultations scheduled for after the constitution of the general courts. “We want to reiterate our responsibility, if the King entrusts Feijóo with the investiture we will comply with our availability,” Gamarra has exposed. “We assume the responsibility that corresponds to us: carry out an investiture”, he added, before recalling that “the candidate of the party that won the elections has always governed” and that the PP has 50 more supports than those of Sánchez alone.
That the winner of the elections govern happened with Felipe González, with José María Aznar, with José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, with Mariano Rajoy and with Pedro Sánchez in 2019. The scenario that opens now, if Sánchez achieves the investiture, would be unprecedented, has targeted the number two of the PP. “Feijóo will seek a broad and constitutional agreement,” Gamarra has repeated.
Regarding the conversations with other formations to coordinate their votes in the election of the members of the Congress Table, Gamarra has assured that “there are 8 days left” for August 17 and that in politics it is a long period of time. He also talked about the fact that the party that won the elections on July 23 will establish “contacts in the parliamentary sphere” over the next few days with different formations to try to control the governing body of the chamber.
Among these parliamentary contacts (not from parties) Genoa does not rule out the PNV group, whose position is decisive in next Thursday’s session to decide whether the Table remains in the hands of the left or the right. The PP is clear that it will fight in these secret ballots, but it has not revealed which deputy will be the candidate for the Presidency of Congress.
