The Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, after a very tough match of three hours and six minutes in which he was against the ropes, signed a great victory this Thursday against the Norwegian Casper Ruud and will face the American Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinals of the Masters Toronto 1000.
Davidovich, number 37 in the world ranking, subdued Ruud, fifth in the ATP ranking, 7-6(4), 4-6 and 7-6(4) in a duel that he never gave up on and that was also was interrupted for an hour and a half by rain in the Canadian city.
The man from Malaga took the first set in the ‘tie break’ after a first set of one hour and twelve 12 minutes in which neither player managed to break his rival’s serve.
Ruud achieved the first ‘break’ of the duel in the second set, but the match had to be interrupted at 2-3 for the Norwegian due to rain after a morning in which the strong wind had also been felt in Toronto.
On the return to the court, Ruud showed himself superior, winning the second set and placing himself at 3-5 in the third set and qualifying within reach.
However, Davidovich did not give up, he gritted his teeth winning three games in a row -including a ‘break’ to Ruud when he served to seal the game- and in the ‘tie break’ he boasted of solidity against an opponent who came down at the worst time.
Davidovich will face McDonald in the quarterfinals, who beat Canadian Milos Raonic 6-3, 6-3 in one hour and 9 minutes.
