The man who was critically injured on Saturday noon by a shot from the Mossos d’Esquadra after escaping a control and trying to ram a patrol car on the A-7 highway, at the height of Vandellòs and L’Hospitalet de l’Infant ( Baix Camp ), died last night at the Joan XXII Hospital in Tarragona, where he was admitted, as reported by the Catalan police this Sunday.

The events took place when the man wanted to evade police control, driving in the opposite direction and tried to crash into the agents. The event began moments before, at 12:40 p.m., when the alleged thief stole a car on Calle de América, in the heart of Amposta (Montsià), and fled down the N-340 towards Tarragona.

A Mossos patrol then began a pursuit of the vehicle to stop the thief and a police checkpoint was set up at kilometer 1,122, where the N-340 becomes the A-7 highway.

When the thief arrived at this point, he saw that he could not continue and decided to turn around, finding himself face to face with the Mossos patrol that was chasing him. According to the Catalan police, the man tried to ram the patrol car and one of the officers opened fire on the stolen car with “the regulation weapon” and one of the bullets went through the front window and hit the man’s head.

The person affected was evacuated by the Emergency Medical System (SEM) in critical condition to the hospital in Tarragona. The Mossos d’Esquadra have opened an investigation into the case and Internal Affairs will review the actions of the agents, following the established protocol whenever the regulation weapon is used.
