In the intervention of the acting president before his group of deputies and senators this morning, Pedro Sánchez has promised to defend the use of the co-official languages, particularly Catalan and Basque, in the European institutions, taking advantage of the fact that he himself presides over these moments the community club.

The initiative is part of the gestures that the socialist party is making to get the support of the Basque Nationalist Party and the two pro-independence groups in Congress, ERC and Junts per Catalunya to gain control of the Legislative Chamber.

But the response from the Basque and Republican spokespersons has not been exactly positive. Quite the opposite.

First, the PNV, through the X account of Aitor Esteban, has replied to the President of the Government. Outside yes and inside no? It seems that the Basques in the state are less European”.

The nationalist groups, together with the PSOE ally, Sumar, are asking Sánchez to make it possible to use the co-official languages ??in the Cortes and Sánchez, with his European proposal this morning, has not responded to this request.

In addition, the PNV spokesman reminded the President of the Government that in the language program financed within the framework of the Strategic Projects for economic recovery and transformation (Perte) and endowed with 1,100 million euros, only two were assigned to the Basque language. This plan was approved in March 2022.

The reply from Esquerra Republicana is oriented in the same direction. The Republican Secretary General, Marta Rovira, wonders “what gesture” is the advance by Sánchez this morning. Rovira recalls that the defense of the use of the co-official languages ??in the European institutions was already a commitment of the central government by virtue of the agreements of the negotiation table between the Catalan and Spanish governments signed in July 2022.

Rovira urges the President of the Government to finish the work done at the European level in this matter and concludes with a warning regarding the willingness of ERC to support the constitution of the Congress Table and the investiture of Sánchez. “Not like that,” he concludes.
