The Generalitat Valenciana has announced this Friday that it will not tolerate “another attack on the language, culture and history of the Valencian Community”. It is his reading after the admission yesterday in Congress of the use of the co-official languages ??of the State that Francina Armengol explained, the result of the negotiation between ERC and Junts with the PSOE.

The second vice president, Susana Camarero, has delivered an institutional statement this Friday -without questions and in Valencian- in which she has asked the acting president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the new president of Congress, Francina Armengol, that “the Valencian have the same official status as the other co-official languages ??of the State”. The Consell thus points to linguistic segregation, moving away from the consensus reached with the creation of the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL), which assumes linguistic unity.

In the manifesto, the Consell, which is made up of PP and Vox, has demanded “respect” from the Government and the new president of Congress for Valencian in the face of the “disastrous” agreement on co-official languages ??and has insisted that “it will not be allowed one more attack or be a bargaining chip for those who want to confront Spain”. They have even assured that they will send a letter to the president of the European Council, Charles Mitchel, “urging him that, in the face of any request that affects us, the Valencian language be respected.”

The institutional declaration of this Friday responds to the measure that was introduced yesterday in the Armengol Congress, after the PSOE agreement with Junts and ERC, to allow “the use of Catalan, Basque and Galician” in the Lower House. The Popular Party of the Valencian Community, and therefore the new autonomous government, did not like that this enumeration did not include the concept “Valencian” -because in the Valencian Community the name “Valencian” is socially accepted in Catalan- and thus They captured it on social media.

It was the case of the Minister for the Environment, Salomé Pradas, who a day before had already criticized that Pedro Sánchez, in his appearance before the Socialist deputies in Congress, did not quote him. “I hope you rectify this disregard and contempt for the language itself and hallmark of the Valencian Community,” claimed Pradas two days ago, who this Friday also attended the appearance of Susana Camarero. The spokesperson for the Council and head of the Economy and Public Administration, Ruth Merino, and the Minister of Justice and the Interior, Elisa Núñez, appointed by Vox, the partner of the PPCV in the Generalitat Valenciana, were also present.

Another of the movements of the Popular Party after the step taken yesterday by the PSOE in Congress has been given by the PP Ombudsman, Miguel Barrachina, who in an urgent call this Friday has presented a proposal “in defense of the Valencian Community, its language, culture and hallmarks”.

It should be remembered that already in the electoral campaign, the now president Carlos Mazón announced a new “Identity Signs Law”, recovery of the one that in March 2015 approved the PP alone in the Corts with the popular Alberto Fabra as head of the Consell. Today Susana Camarero explained in the statement read that in the next plenary session of the Consell, in September, another of an institutional type will be approved “in defense of Valencian, recognized, like Castilian, in article 6 of the Statute of Autonomy and in the 3 of the Constitution”.

On the other hand, just a month ago, the new Minister of Education, Universities and Employment, José Antonio Rovira, assured that knowledge of Valencian is “fundamental”, but “it cannot be the central axis for eight years” of this department , as, in his opinion, happened in the previous government of the Botànic. That is why he announced changes to the decree on multilingualism in the classroom and a reduction in the percentage of classes in Valencian in areas with language exemption for being Spanish speakers.
