The Mauritanian authorities have prohibited the dissemination of the Barbie film and all propaganda related to the film, considering it a vehicle of moral corruption and contravention of Islamic values ??for, among other things, dealing with issues related to the LGTBI movement and questioning the family traditional: values ??that are inconsistent with those promoted by the region’s Muslim-majority countries.

This was announced this Saturday by the president of the Advertising Regulation Authority, Mohamed Abdellahi Lehbib, in a message on his Facebook page, in which he indicated that the measure was taken under the guidance and supervision of the Minister of Culture.

“The dissemination of the media propaganda of the Barbie film has been blocked, which violates the principles and values ??of our society,” wrote Lehbib, who urged citizens to denounce any attempt to promote this film in any media.

The advertisement for the film, which premiered this year in the United States, caused a great deal of controversy on Mauritanian social networks, where most Internet users expressed their rejection and indignation for what they considered an offense against the country’s religion and culture. .

The strongest criticism came from the women’s organization of the main opposition Islamist Tauasul party, which called Barbie a “vector for the spread of perversion”, noting that it has been banned in several Muslim countries.

The Warner Bros. film has already been censored in Lebanon, Egypt and Kuwait and adds detractors in the Middle East. However, it has managed to get rid of the snip in countries like Pakistan, Saudi Arabia -the region’s main market- and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where it was released with the recommendation “for people over 15 years of age”, and after receiving the go-ahead well after weeks of local censors suggesting edits to the film.
