Far from the days when princes only related to each other, a new royal romance has recalled those old days when the nobility forced to choose a consort of ancestry.

Prince Christian of Denmark, eldest son of Crown Princes Frederick and Mary of Denmark, forms a young couple with Princess Maria Clara of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, daughter of Prince Charles of Bourbon and Chevron-Villette, one of the pretenders to the Headquarters of the disputed royal house of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. She turned 18 on January 1 and he will celebrate his coming of age on October 15.

As published by the Danish royal house, Cristián’s priority this year will be to finish his studies while still playing a secondary role in the monarchy. But before that, this summer, the prince spent a few days with María Clara’s family in Saint-Tropez, where her parents have a summer residence. Together they were seen accompanied by a group of friends enjoying an ice cream through the streets of the town on the Costa Azul.

The couple has known each other since childhood, since their parents were already friends —María Clara’s father is godfather to Princess Josefina, one of Cristián’s little sisters—, but rumors about their romance began last May for an image in which they posed together at the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix. In the photograph, published on social networks, also appeared a group of friends and María Clara’s older sister, Princess María Carolina.

Formed the commotion by their possible romance, at that time the princess was asked by the newspaper Corriere della sera about her relationship with the grandson of Queen Margarita II and replied: “We are just good friends, but I do not see myself as queen today for today”. “There is a good understanding, there is a beautiful friendship and we have a lot of fun together,” she added.

Clara studies fashion at the Marangoni Institute and social sciences at Harvard University. Outstanding in her studies, she has given multiple interviews in which she has demonstrated her intellect and her philanthropy. She also attended the last April Fair in Seville for the second consecutive year, where she visited as a flamenco dancer.

This young romance is reminiscent of that of a cousin of María Clara, whose wedding recently united old European royalty with Scottish nobility. Prince Jaime of Bourbon-Two Sicilies married Lady Charlotte Lindesay-Bethune in 2021.

Beyond claiming a missing throne, Clara’s father has faced a war in the last decade with Pedro de Bourbon-Two Sicilies and Orleans, Duke of Calabria, for the headship of the royal house of Bourbon-Two Sicilies. This has led to awkward situations such as Princess María Carolina holding the same title as her uncle in the fourth grade; and that Princess María Clara holds the same title as her distant cousin, the Duchy of Noto. The dynastic mess led to the existence of another suitor, Francisco Felipe de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, who is the most discreet and perhaps the most entitled in the succession conflict.
