The Barcelona City Council has activated the daytime alert phase of the Heat Plan in view of the peak of high temperatures that is expected for this Wednesday, which could exceed 33 degrees in the Catalan capital, it reported in a statement.
In this way, the Department of Emergencies and Social Emergencies (Cuesb), in coordination with the municipal Civil Protection service and in collaboration with the Red Cross, has activated the preventive street device to distribute information, caps and canteens to homeless people in a vulnerable situation.
This new alert is added to the emergency phase for torrid nights, which the City Council activated this Tuesday and which will continue in view of the forecast that the high temperatures at night will last a few more days.
The measure comes after learning today that the Fabra Observatory in the Catalan capital recorded the highest minimum temperature in history last morning (29.4 degrees). That record, which the Observatory points out is “provisional” until the end of the day, since a higher minimum could still occur before midnight, implies that never in 109 years of registration had the mercury set such a high minimum during the night , bordering on 30 degrees.
The meteorological service of Catalonia, Meteocat, forecasts a temperature of 32 degrees for the next few hours in Barcelona until after 8:00 p.m., on what will be the hottest day of this week, although the heat wave is expected to last at least until Friday.
